Embrace the Employability Skills
An engineering student must realize the significance of becoming employable by enhancing skill-set with respect to employability skills. These skills can be defined as skills required for gaining employment and enhancing progress within a given organization. The beholder of these skills i.e. either an engineering student or already working employee can gain their full potential at their workplaces. In recent past, many skills have been identified and attributed, which can be grouped under broad groupings.
Key employability skills:
- Communication and interpersonal skills:
Specifically, employability skills constitute communication and interpersonal skills. This is the ability of students to express what they actually mean with utmost clarity and conciseness. It must manifest in both written and spoken communication. Being a good listen and responding in an apt way is also crucial underlying aspect under this skill set.
- Problem solving skills:
Being a Problem solver adds competitive advantage. Problem solving skills are also valuable in employability skills. It is the ability of understanding and overcoming a problem by breaking it down to smaller parts and successfully dealing with these parts. This skillset helps in identification of crucial issues, their implications and solutions. Students are given the chance of applying knowledge gained from numerous sources.
- Ability to take initiative:
Further, ability to take initiative and being self-motivated is also highly appreciable skills in the context of employability skills. These skills give rise to having ideas that can be transformed to reality. There has to be a strong personal drive, where an individual does not look for guidelines so as to accomplish a particular activity.
- Readiness for meeting the deadlines:
Modern day employers look for students who are actually hard-working and always ready for meeting the deadlines under pressure. This aspect elucidates that student should be in a position to handle the stress that eventually rises with a deadline that must be met. Students incapable of performing under pressure are bound to break down along the way and will not have the ability to deliver performance as expected by employer.
- Organizational skills:
Employability skills constitute an indispensable aspect named Organizational skills. This is a skill set of a student being aptly methodical and organized. It preaches an ability to plan activities in such a manner that deadlines are met and targets are achieved by the students. Sharpening this aspect will ensure a student being able to perform as per the objectives of the employer organization.
- Ability to work inteams:
One of the significant and mostly recognized skill is Team working. Students must manifest their ability to work productively along with their counterparts. There is always an ample diversity in actual working environment where your counterparts, colleagues, higher authorities, sub-ordinates and many more folks usually come from different backgrounds and disciplines. Sharpening and adapting attitude always yields better outcomes in terms of team building skills.
Pay-backs of being skilled in employability skills:
- Increased adaptability and learnability:
The next step in “employability skills” ladder emphasizes an important skill known as Ability to learn and adapt. Students who have inculcated this skill are always enthusiastic about work. These students intend to discover ways of learning from their mistakes. This aspect is beneficial to both the employer and employees. It is pretty simple to prevent a disaster once students willingly accept their mistakes and are ready to learn from them.
- Improved analytical skills:
Further up the ladder will need to possess a noteworthy skill known as Numeracy. Its the ability of using data, intermediate results and mathematics to support evidence. Its an important foundation for ensuring successful demonstrations. For any firm, facts and figures need to be precise for effective proceedings of all business processes. Hence students need to hone this skill to become competent in this aspect.

- Capability in Valuing differences and diversity:
A student should be able and capable in Valuing differences and diversity. This is regarded as a valuable skill. There needs to be an indulgent of different needs that arise from diverse group of people. The thought-process is based on the massive gains that are yielded by firms based on diversity aspects and its effective management.

- Sharpened negotiation skills :
Last but not the least type of skill in employability skillset is negotiation skills. Students with this skill make a lot of difference and organizations which are hiring them thrive based on their performance and even these students achieve higher and higher career altitudes.
