We often say “how time flies”. Yes, it flies; but good news is you are the pilot. Every day it credits 86400 seconds in your ‘Time’ account, you utilize it, waste it & every night, remaining time is burned . There is no going back or taking loan in advance. Hence investing in present time is important in such a manner that it gives you good returns in success, wealth & peace of mind.
“You too can be a Dhirubhai Ambani. Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same no of hours per day of given to Mother Teresa, Thomas Edison, Henry ford, J. R. D. Tata & Albert Einstein”
-K. K. Bajaj
It’s said that an average person waste one hour day looking for lost things only. He gets 13 year out of active life & 60 years to make his or her career. Time needs only effective management. You might have experienced that unless there is an emergency, you don’t actually plan for doing things. Working with such attitude creates stress, decreases work efficiency & spoils health. Also improper time management leads often us to do important tasks at the end of the day when energy level is low. M Scott Peak, author of famous book ‘The Road Less Travelled’ has said “Until you value for your life, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not succeed”
Brian Tracy in his book ‘Eat that Frog’ gives emphasis on time management and avoiding procrastination. He asks that if a live frog is given to you & told to eat it same day, what time of day you will choose? A common human mentality is to first deny such tasks, if accepted then procrastinate it by saying ‘I will do it later’ & at the end of day frog is still alive! But if you would have eaten the frog in the morning itself, you can go through with satisfaction of knowing that it is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long. A major reason for procrastination or lack of motivation as said by Brian Tracy is vagueness, confusion & fuzzy mindedness about what you are trying to do, in what order & for what reason. He has suggested following do’s in order for the effective time management.
1. Decide exactly what you/your job wants.
2. Write it on a paper, note list of tasks.
3. Organize the list by priority & sequence. You can also tag the tasks in the sequence like ‘important’, ‘important but can be delayed’, ‘less important’ & ‘must be completed but no time limit’ and then start working with the task ‘important’ in the morning.
4. Make a list of all actions necessary for successful completion of the task.
5. Set a deadline for tasks you can also add sub deadlines according to hierarchy.
Half of problems of life are because of saying ‘Yes’ quickly & another half of the problem of life are due to not saying ‘No; in time. If you are not sure whether you can complete a task when somebody asks you, it is always convenient to say ‘No’. The time that saved can be utilized for other tasks or self development.
“Time management is really a misnomer. The challenge is not to manage time, but to manage ourselves.”
-Stephan R. Covey
